Intramural Dancing and Singing Competitions

Here are two highlights videos of student performances organised by the Student Union at our school (SKH Lam Woo Memorial Secondary School). The first video—Battle of Dance—is an inter-class dance competition. The second video—SU Dance-Show—is a singing and dancing competition

1. Battle of Dance

Type of Media: Video
Completed: January 2009

Editing, sound recording, sound editing, animation, music recording, video recording: Stephen Richards / Video recording:  Tommy Wong, Allan Tam,  Galen Kot

This is an eight-minute video showing the highlights of the SU Battle of Dance interclass dance competition organised by the Students’ Union of SKH Lam Woo Memorial Secondary School (Hong Kong). The event was held during the Christmas Assembly on 23 December 2008.

In the video, I tried to create an upbeat mood and show the hard work the students put into their preparations (and the fun they had while rehearsing). I would like to thank the performers and the Students’ Union for their hard work and cooperation. I hope this video can reflect their efforts.

One of the aims of the making the video was simply so that I could learn how to use the video editing software that had been purchased for the school’s studio.
The video is also published on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/12144209).

Technical Information

To get a clearer audio sound, I use our portable digital audio recorder to get a feed directly from the mixing panel (this would get the live mix  of the performer’s background music and their singing) and then mixed that with the sound recorded from the video cameras (to get the sound of the audience).

The following software programmes were used:

  • Premiere Pro (video & audio editing)
  • After Effects: (post production work and text animation)
  • Photoshop (image editing)
  • iClone 3 (basic animation)

In the opening animation sequence I used my own face when animating the dancers. You can see the whole process here:
